I get lost in your eyes

And I feel my spirits rise

And soar like the wind

Is it love that I am in?

I get weak in a glance

Isn't this what's called romance?

And now I know

'Cause when I'm lost I can't let go

I don't mind not knowing what I'm headed for

You can take me to the skies

It's like being lost in heaven

When I'm lost in your eyes

I just fell, don't know why

Something's there we can't deny

And when I first knew

Was when I first looked at you

And if I can't find my way

If salvation seems worlds away

Oh I'll be found

When I am lost in your eyes

I don't mind not knowing what I'm headed for

You can take me to the skies

It's like being lost in heaven

When I'm lost in your eyes

I get weak in a glance

Isn't this what's called romance?

Oh I'll be found

When I am lost in your eyes

I was 27 when this song was released--

on my birthday, no less!

But back then I was a total music snob who,

while listening to it in public,

would deride it, and the artist, Debbie Gibson,

mercilessly.

I was all about the heavy metal and the hair bands,

and anything that didn't belong to either

wasn't worthy of my rockin' self.

What stupidity.

In private, however, whenever this tune came on

I'd turn the radio way up and listen intently--

headphones tight against my skull--

because this truly is a beautiful ballad,

one any musician, I feel, should be deeply proud

to have written were he or she lucky enough

to have come up with it.

It's an easy thing to knock songs like these

as "teeny-bopper tunes,"

and it's easy to knock the artists,

especially if, as Ms. Gibson was,

a teenager at the time.

I was as guilty as anyone for doing so.

But while my peers may have genuinely hated it

(and so sad for them),

I genuinely loved it, but lacked the courage

of my convictions, let alone self-esteem,

to say so.

I feel this song could easily be re-recorded as

either a country song or a metal one.

There's a lot of freedom to explore there.

In the meantime, please enjoy.

And don't be ashamed:

this truly is a great song that should be heard

by everyone.

Take off the headphones and turn it up!
