You see this guy

This guy's in love with you

Yes I'm in love

Who looks at you the way I do

When you smile I can tell

We know each other very well

How can I show you?

I'm glad I got to know you 'cause

I've heard some talk

They say you think I'm fine

Yes, I'm in love

And what I'd do to make you mine ...

Tell me now--is it so?

Don't let me be the last to know

My hands are shakin'

Don't let my heart keep breakin' 'cause

I need your love

I want your love

Say you're in love

In love with this guy

If not I'll just die

Tell me now--is it so?

Don't let me be the last to know

My hands are shakin'

Don't let my heart keep breakin' 'cause

I need your love

I want your love

Say you're in love

In love with this guy

If not I'll just die

Even as a young man I knew I would never marry.

There was just something deep, deep inside that told

me it would never happen.

And despite the efforts of many,

from the honest to the nastily manipulative,

all failed.

All failed despite the fact that I was voted

"Most Likely to Get Married by 21"

by my high-school classmates.

I remember laughing when they handed me the little trophy.

But I wasn't laughing with them.

I was laughing at them.

The fools.

This amazing song is one that I have heard at more than

one wedding, especially as I was growing up in the

60s and 70s.

It's a great choice, and I have to admit

that when this comes on, I sometimes

imagine myself dancing with my new bride as this plays

at our wedding.

What does she look like, you might ask?

I never picture myself specifically,

but, say, characters from my books:

Maggie and Aedan, for example.

(Pictured above.)

This song ranks for me as one of the greatest pop love songs ever recorded.

There are simply too many superlatives to list here where it's concerned.

If this song doesn't touch you, let alone in the deepest part of your heart,

get yourself to a doctor. Or a priest. Or a guru on a mountain somewhere.

Because you, Jake, are suffering from a terminal case of cynicism.
