Listen to Her Heart
Tom Petty
~~*~~
You think you're gonna take her away
With your money and your cocaine
You keep thinkin' that her mind is gonna change
But I know everything is okay
She's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of lovin'
But she don't need you
You want me to think that I'm being used
You want her to think it's over
You can't see it doesn't matter what you do
Buddy, you don't even know her
She's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of lovin'
But she don't need you
And you just can't creep up behind her
And you can't understand that she's my girl
She's my girl!
Yeah, she's gonna listen to her heart
It's gonna tell her what to do
She might need a lot of lovin'
But she don't need you!

There are songs that take me back less to specific times
than to feelings and images I had during those times.
It's an important distinction.
It was the early 80s for me.
I was in college, in Greeley, Colorado.
It's a quiet little town that tries really hard to be
as Midwestern as it can be.
This song feels very Midwest to me,
and so images and feelings come flooding
back every time I listen to it.
Girls in 501 Levis.
Their perfume.
Making out along a dusty highway
under the moonlight.
The smell of corn.
The sense of possibility, and freedom.
Driving late at night.
Fast food at midnight, with friends,
after a night dancing,
my ears still ringing from the blasting music.
I have never been a huge Tom Petty fan,
but this song checks all the boxes for me.
It's a great tune that didn't get enough airplay.
