Daydream Believer
The Monkees

Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings
The six o'clock alarm would never ring
But it rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shavin' razor's cold and it stings
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen?
You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, and our good times starts and end
Without dollar one to spend
But how much, baby, do we really need?
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen
Cheer up, sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen

I was just a little dude when The Monkees aired in the mid-60s.
I remember my older sisters going crazy for it,
as well as the members of the group.
I grew up with their music,
though it always seemed far away to me,
something I couldn't quite touch,
couldn't quite wrap my head around.
This is my favorite song of theirs.
When I think of the 60s,
I don't think it was a great, rebellious decade.
There was Martin, yes, and Bobby, and Malcolm.
But those back then who supported them and
scrawled peace signs on their VW buses
or protested the war in Vietnam
ended up voting for a monster in 2016
to the tune of almost eighty percent.
That's incontrovertible fact.
So the 60s, sadly, was just another decade
of herd animals pretending to care,
pretending to change,
pretending to give a shit
about such things as peace, love, goodwill,
and nonviolence.
Cheer up, sleepy Jean.
There's a good chance that monster
will be voted back into office
by those same folks in 2024.
Peace, love, and understanding my ass.
