Personal Jesus
Depeche Mode

Reach out, touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver
Reach out, touch faith
Reach out, touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
I will deliver
You know I'm a forgiver
Reach out, touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Reach out, touch faith
Reach out, touch faith
Reach out, touch faith
Reach out, touch faith
Reach out, touch faith
Reach out, touch faith

A story for you, a personal life highlight.
A "peak experience," if you will.
I decided to get a teaching certificate.
The year: 1991.
There was one more final to take.
It was scheduled at 7 PM, of all things.
Four of us, buddies in this final class,
decided to go get some drinks beforehand.
There was me, two girls, and another guy.
We ended up taking that damn final hammered.
(I aced it.)
To celebrate finishing the program,
we decided to return to the bar we'd been at earlier
and really tie one on.
It was midweek, Wednesday or Thursday.
The bar was dead.
It had a really nice dance floor in the basement.
It was closed.
The manager saw us living it up
and came over to ask what we were celebrating.
We told him.
One of the girls, Laurie (I believe her name was),
exclaimed, "I wanna dance!"
The manager smiled.
"Okay. For you four only.
Enjoy yourselves."
We couldn't believe our ears!
He unlocked the door, unlocked the DJ booth,
and took his leave.
Just like that!
Wow, what a night.
We danced and danced, the whole damn floor to ourselves.
We had the spinning lights going, had the fog machine going,
had all this room to just go crazy.
The manager even had a waiter come down to get us drinks!
(Probably also to make sure we weren't
trashing the place.
We weren't.
After all, we were newly minted teachers,
for Christ's sake!)
One of the songs that came on was this one:
"Personal Jesus."
It's a great song to dance to,
if you haven't already figured that out.
I don't remember the other girl's name,
but we were getting pretty cozy whenever slow songs came on.
She was gorgeous, but had a boyfriend.
Lucky guy--
'cuz lordy, lordy, did I give it my college best.
Oh, well.
I hope she and the rest of them remember that
night as fondly as I do
more than three decades later.
