Who's gonna tell you when

It's too late?

Who's gonna tell you things

Aren't so great?

You can't go on

Thinkin' nothin's wrong ...

Who's gonna drive you home

Tonight?

Who's gonna pick you up

When you fall?

Who's gonna hang it up

When you call?

Who's gonna pay attention

To your dreams?

Who's gonna plug their ears

When you scream?

You can't go on

Thinkin' nothin's wrong,

(Who's gonna drive you?)

Who's gonna drive you home

(Who's gonna drive you? Who's gonna drive)

Tonight?

Who's gonna hold you down

When you shake?

Who's gonna come around

When you break?

You can't go on

Thinkin' nothin's wrong,

(Who's gonna drive you?)

Who's gonna drive you home

(Who's gonna drive you? Who's gonna drive)

Tonight?

Oh, you know you can't go on

Thinkin' nothin's wrong

(Who's gonna drive you?)

Who's gonna drive you home

(Who's gonna drive you? Who's gonna drive)

Tonight?

You may be old enough to remember

Martha Quinn from MTV's early days.

Lord, did I have a crush on her.

I even wrote her a letter,

which she actually answered!

She once commented about this song,

where she said that it was borderline

unlistenable to her, so heartbreaking was it.

The video, if you have watched it,

only adds to the pain it brings.

I was never a fan of The Cars.

I couldn't stand them, in fact.

I thought they, and Ric Ocasek in particular,

were idiots and buffoons, their music

childish and ridiculous.

Then "Drive" was released.

First off, it's sung by Benjamin Orr instead of

Ocasek, which immediately made its stock rise.

Orr was an entirely underutilized member of that band

and probably ninety-nine percent of its total talent,

though it was Ocasek who wrote this song.

(Sometimes the gods smile on you.)

Second were the lyrics--haunting, heartbreaking.

Third was the melody, which for a while

I thought couldn't have been the Cars,

because the Cars didn't sound like that.

The Cars, of course, released more music after

this gem, and once again I thought them ludicrous.
