Draggin' the Line

Makin' a livin' the old hard way

Takin' and givin' by day by day

I dig snow and rain and the bright sunshine

Draggin' the line [draggin' the line]

My dog, Sam, eats purple flowers

Ain't got much, but what we got's ours

We dig snow and rain and the bright sunshine

Draggin' the line [draggin' the line]

Draggin' the line [draggin' the line]

I feel fine!

I'm talkin' 'bout peace of mind

I'm gonna take my time

I'm gettin' the good sign

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

Lovin' the free and feelin' spirit

Of huggin' a tree, when you get near it

Diggin' the snow and rain and the bright sunshine

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

I feel fine!

I'm talkin' 'bout peace of mind

I'm gonna take my time

I'm gettin' the good sign

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

Draggin' the line--draggin' the line

The years 1970 - 74 are very big to me.

Much was occurring in my young life,

way too much of it really awful.

But there were some very bright days

that offset the misery,

and so a great deal of my spirit,

I have found,

has clung to them,

despite the pain and anguish.

This song, its unabashed optimism, its upbeat tempo,

its radical declaration:

I feel fine!

was a guidepost for me,

and called to that part of me

to lift my chin and soldier on.

In these dark times,

music like this is needed more than ever.
