Diamond Girl - you sure do shine

Glad I found you - glad you're mine

Oh my love, you're like a precious stone

Part of Earth where heaven has rained on

Makes no difference where you are

Day or nighttime you're like a shinin' star

How could I shine without you?

When it's about you that I am

Diamond Girl - roamin' wild

Such a rare thing - radiant child

I could never find another one like you

Part of me is deep down inside you

Can't you feel the whole world a-turnin'?

We are real and we are a-burnin'

Diamond Girl now that I've found you

It's around you that I am

Diamond Girl - you sure do shine

Diamond Girl - you sure do shine

Diamond Girl - you sure do shine

Diamond Girl - you sure do shine

To survive my childhood, I swam.

I didn't know that's what I was doing.

It took decades for me to realize it.

I became, as one older swimmer put it,

"a machine."

I'd swim until I vomited.

The workout finished,

if I had energy afterward,

I'd often fly off into a rage

in the car on the way home,

or at home itself.

My mother, who was the one who often

picked me up, couldn't understand.

Neither could I.

It too would take decades to come to grips with

and understand fully.

This song--"Diamond Girl"--was an earworm for me,

but a very welcome one.

It would play in my head as I pushed myself harder

ever harder.

Its driving beat kept me moving.

I have cherished it ever since.
