Once More

Bench: Photography by Shawn Michel de Montaigne

What swells within me: life and death, lust and revenge,

a remembered conversation, a long-dead loved one …

The rays of light whose sun shines only in me,

whose warmth comforts only those crevasses and valleys and peaks I can climb,

whose breeze-rippled waters call to mind fathomless depths only I can plumb,

whose bite refreshes as it is swallowed,

whose bite is only mine, can forever only be mine …

What swells within me this world cannot touch, cannot pollute, cannot stalk,

cannot criticize, cannot overpopulate, cannot befoul—try as it might.

I recline for a nap, victorious once more.
